In Asia when I tell folks I'm from Chicago they seem to know it for these things in this order:1. Jordan and the Bulls2. President Obama3. blues and house music4. mafia5. deep dish pizza
I learned 1 word well when I was studying in France for 3 months: "No!" The French will deny you all sorts of things with a haughty air if you're there long enough. Fries and a potato at the cafetaria? "No!" Can I get that meal to go? "No!"Is the train on time? "No!" Do you know how late it will be? "No!"And they'll shut doors and close their shops in your faces. They'll have signs saying they speak English/German/etc and refuse to speak it after all. This was in a small city about 2hrs by train from Paris, btw. Of course there are some friendly French people... generally the younger students were friendly... but man did I have trouble with the general shop people, train station employees, cashiers, waiters, cleaning staff, etc. There are many things I liked about the country, but their attitude towards me was not on that list. I felt like I was a Mexican in Texas!
DucoNihilum: Maybe those American friends were acting like boors? I was in Paris this last summer and Parisian people were very friendly. They can come off as standoffish but that's because French people are actually a little shy and reserved.
I always tell people, "Hey, remember Morrigan, the hot succubus from Darkstalkers and Marvel vs. Capcom? Take the 'M' off the name, so it's 'orrigan,' and that's how you pronounce 'Oregon.'"
Portillos is a mediocre chain in the suburbs outside of the city of Chicago that serves Chicago style food quite average. Portillos doesn't count because Chicago has too many restaurants for anyone here to bother with a popular suburban eatery that serves crappy pizza, okay burgers, and a bunch of other decent food but Chicago would be known for it's food in general over a suburban eatery. Keyword is CHICAGO, not the Suburbs..Even if there was a Portillos in the city, why would anyone eat there?
