tonioloewald.blogspot.com — There have been a lot of rumors concerning Apple's possible support for Windows apps (and, more importantly, games) in Leopard. Most attention is on Boot Camp and Parallels, but there's a third option.

Shameless self-promotion :-)

Wine doesn't work well enough for Apple to seriously consider it, and probably the minefield of IP issues in the development of Wine would freak out Apple's lawyers. And this is old speculation, marked as lame.

I don't know why every one makes this so complicated!..Welcome to the new world of computing! nothing beats Apple's innovation!

With the amount of stock in Apple that Microsoft owns I don't think they would run exe files without Microsoft approval.

Can anyone name one windows app worth using that comes as a single executable with no supporting files/registry entries? To run a windows app you HAVE to run Windows.

Edit: Intended as a reply to AerodynamicHairI think the problem with that is that it removes the incentive for many companies to port their software, when they know it will function perfectly well on OS X without modification. I doubt you'll see a lot of Vista-only software (games notwithstanding) for the first few years after release, so rather than "levelling the playing field", Windows (in general) is still the "big guy" due to its overwhelming market dominance which people who wrote for it before would write for, and now some companies who were contemplating porting their software to OS X due to its rising popularity will have one less reason.I doubt it'll dissuade many of those who are already producing OS X-only software, though. And in the longer term, the increased uptake of macs could make it more worthwhile. :)

@ dooraqueNo, that was YellowBox for NT. Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to call people clueless.

I've been hearing about this for a while. I'm really excited to see what 10.5 holds in store for us. If support for win32 apps DOES become a part of it, I wont hesitate for a second to sell off my gaming rig and buy a new Mac. When it comes down to it, I now have only two reasons for using a Windows box. 1. Games, 2. Testing. That's about it. The rest of my computer related work throughout any given day is done on a Mac. I've also been thinking a lot about this (ever since I first heard the rumors). There are at least a handful of paths Apple could take for this. WINE does seem like a very possible solution, however. They have the developers, they have the design team, they have everything they need to implement a version of WINE that could work behind the scenes, integrate seamlessly, and accomplish just such a task, if done properly.
