The presidency is not meant to be selected by popular majority vote. It never was and should not be. The only Federal Constitutional office that was meant to be selected by popular vote is membership in the House of Representatives, the Peoples' House. Senators were even intended to represent the individual states' interest in the federal system, not the people's, before their selection was changed by amendment.
