Like the idea but it seems to contradict one of the purpose of RSS feeds; simplicity.

That's a good point -- but it aims to not confuse a novice user who happens to click a Feed Icon, or RSS icon, or subscription link instead of add it to their reader of choice. I would have to agree, though, it does complicate things a bit.
