nwfdailynews.com— House Republican leaders, giving in to political reality, plan a vote to raise the $5.15 minimum wage before leaving Washington this weekend for a five-week recess.

Or watch as businesses cut jobs because they can't afford to keep the same amount of labor. Thus increasing unemployment. Then people complain about that.
@theblooms"Which means, they STILL are getting more than minimum wage, because they are getting tips! "Congratulations, you've just blown any cover of actually knowing what you're talking about. If they're in a food services job that would get tips, that means they're weighting tables, and the minimum wages for that type job is $2.13/hour. Nice try though.
@commandar!Do you KNOW anyone who has tended bar or waited tables? I have waited tables, while in HS. And yes, I made a hell of a lot more money than minimum wage after tips, and that was at a s**tty restaurant. As does every SI employee that I know. Including my father. My dad worked all his life as a typesetter at ad agencies. Recently, he started tending bar at the age of 55, and now he makes MORE doing that than he ever did as a typesetter. So YES, I know what I am talking about.
my grandmother used to tell me about how back before the 50's or so, almost all politicians didn't recive more than a token salary for their work in the government. most of the time they were doing their normal jobs, but got called in to office when they were needed. though it would probably get twisted now so that you'd have some big crazy intrests in power like the guys from enron. can you imagine those guys being in control of the government? scary thought, glad it's not that way huh?
Why should the government care how much money private citizens make? If someone has a crappy job making only $5.15 an hour and they don't like it, they can get a better paying job. We don't need House Republicans passing a law saying that poor people can get better jobs if they apply themselves. Those people that actually do make minimum wage (does anyone know any?) have two options: (1) remain complacent and wait for the government to increase wages -> increase prices -> increase inflation, ruining it for the rest of us -> increase the poverty level, or (2) get a better job.Labor, like money, is a scarce good. Government intervention should be just as scarce.
Except that only a small percentage of food service workers are waiter/waitress or bartenders. Kitchen staff at restaurants usually only get a small fraction of tips if anything at all. When I worked in a successful kitchen it worked out to about $1 an hour when business was good, but was often less than $0.50/hourAnd we are only talking about sitdown restaurants here. Nobody tips at fast food joints or convenience stores where most of these jobs are. And who works these jobs when the kids are in school?? Not every minimum wage worker is a High School student. I met many very impoverished adults (often senior citizens) working these dead end low pay jobs without any escape in sight.
Senator Byron Dorgan was on Charlie Rose last night. He says he's tried to shut down the law that uses our tax dollars to ship our jobs to China. Charlie asked him why there was there so much opposition to this move. The senator tactfully replied that he didn't know, but (at the risk of being indelicate) I'm guessing the traitorous whores in Congress -- who'd sell us all out if they could -- have something to do with it.
Kinda late to the party here, but I thought I'd add this anyway. The Republicans are bundling this minimum wage legislation with "poison pills" -- namely, an estate tax repeal and making more of the wealthy's tax cuts permanent. The same estate tax elimination that the Senate just rejected is being bundled with this bill. See this:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/07/28/national/w130835D66.DTL&type=politicsThis is BS political theater. The Republicans have no intention of raising minimum wage...they only want to be able to go home to their districts and SAY they tried to raise minimum wage, but Democrats blocked it. It's a move to blunt political criticism, not to actually do anything. This is their playbook. As soon as Democrats said that they'd make a living wage part of their 2006 campaign -- this became the GOP response. They're betting that you're stupid enough to believe that they (the majority) actually tried to raise the minimum wage, but the minority blocked it ("OBSTRUCTIONISTS!!!11!"), and they'll make no mention of the odious attachments that were already considered and rejected. Don't fall for it.
When all Exxon/Mobil/BP/Chevron employees are confronted with a maximum wage the price of gas will fall to less than two dollars a gallon. A pound of lean ground beef will be .99 cents. When no corporation CEO can make more than it's lowest paid salary employee, the price of everything will drop like a snake crawling off a hot rock to avoid the intense light of day.

Guess who's fault it is that they are making $5.15 an hour?
