I signed up for Hotmail before Microsoft bought it. Shortly after the MS acquisition I suddenly started getting a flood of spam email. The funny thing was that the address wasn't very public, in fact less than 10 people knew of that address. In any case I could barely find my legit emails amongst the swarm of spam and when Gmail came out the killer feature wasn't "search don't sort", it was the blissful absence of spam.
