After a great deal of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that homosexuality is in general, ethically neutral. In other words, there is nothing in the Ethical Universe that specifically proscribes the deep longing for a same-sex partner. In order to ethically judge a homosexual person, we must know what other real ethical values attach to them. Since we use this same criteria to judge people with a ?straight? orientation, I have to conclude that homosexuals should also be judged as individuals ? this just happens to be what most homosexuals seem to want the most anyway, so let?s give it to them.I came to one other (somewhat complicating) conclusion in my excursion, however; namely, that the real bottom-line question that veritably screams for an answer is whether or not it is also correct to consider the gay community as a legitimate minority group in our society? In other words, should a classification as a minority ? based on sexual preference alone ? be granted therefore justifying them in asking for their civil rights to be ?protected? as a group under our constitution? In a way this seems a little like double dipping, so to speak, like asking for ?protection? because your group prefers pistachio ice cream rather than the more traditional vanilla, chocolate or strawberry!
