mercypolitics.blogspot.com — Homelessness & extreme poverty is one of the biggest scandal in America's society. The numbers are truly incredible, and the recession will only make the problem worse. In Los Angeles (America's capital of homelessness) the current estimate is 80,000. In New-Orleans post Katrina 12,000. The photographs were taken between 1983 & 2008.

I was a NoLibs fan long before I got the nerve up to friend him :) We'd disagreed a few times (ouch) but what I admire about him is exactly what you said - he has a knack for going for the jugular, but he has sound arguments, which is more than can be said for a lot of people on digg. He won't let it go to his head, he's got too much class for that.

You're digging a guy up who lies about being a marine, CEO of a fortune 500 company, PhD in economics, nearly a pro football player... yet he trolls diggs commenting endlessly.Do you guys really want to add more fuel to the troll fire?

Folks... Just to let you know.I went to Google to see if I had a chance to rent / buy this DVD here in Brazil, ands was really amazed by the stir and polemic it has already provoked ... just the trailer! – Google the name of the documentary and you will immediately spot the stir up it is provoking in this political correct world we live in. Conclusion: it certainly is not a trivial issue.

Caferrell's point deals with depression. Many of the people I knew on The Row, were not depressed, at all. I'd say that for some, those who are attached to the material, the status, the "norm" might become depressed. Many, many of the people I knew on Skid Row were far from self-loathing, or depressed. Some simply accepted that this is where they were. Some, even after "rescue" by family and institutions, returned to the Row. There is a sense of community on Skid Row. There is a sense of community on Skid Row. Think about that for a minute. That's my point.

Capitalism, democracy etc. can not funtion without morality. Modern secular humanism has failed in that regard. The freedom it promised if we could just get rid of all that "superstitious religious" stuff has never materialised. Enlightenment 18th and 19th centuries moral inversion of the west in the 20th century. Cloud of capitalism? No. Eradication of evil? Yes.

I agree clvngodess. There is a sense of family or camaraderie among the people on the street. They count on each other, they usually don't go hungry, they learn to get along and in the end they don't want the hassle of dealing with the "world"But they didn't start on the street and most didn't consider that the street was their goal until they gave up trying to compete and gave up struggling to be accepted in the "world".It is in the period when they transition from mainstream society to the street that the shame they feel when confronted with "succesful" people, drives them back to their non-judgemental friends on the street.

“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Alexander Solzhentisyn 1918-2008
