msnbc.msn.com — Last month Goodman, an 81-year-old retired University of Kansas history professor, received a letter from his friend in the Philippines that had been opened and resealed with a strip of dark green tape bearing the words ?by Border Protection? and carrying the official seal of the Department of Homeland Security.

since many of you carry that "those who have nothing to fear have nothing to hide" attitude, let me ask you this question:if the deer have nothing to hide, then why are they running from the hunter?i mean, its only the SHIFTY elements of the deer population that run away, right?

Hmm, they arrested that guy over there for no reason. Well, he wears a towel on his head and has a non-mainstream religion, so I guess it is ok, as it doesn't affect me.Now they've arrested that reporter for breaking a story of how political dissedents were rounded up in the middle of the night. He shouldn't have tried to divide the country up with a story like that. They were probably guilty of something anyway. Plus it didn't affect me, so I guess it is still ok.Wow, my neighbor voted for an independent candidate and spoke openly about the constitution being violated? He and his family deserved to be deported and all of their posessions confiscated for being so un-American. Besides, they do that in other countries too, so it must be ok. And it still doesn't affect me, and its the price we pay for our freedom. I was searched yesterday for no reason. It's not a big deal as I have nothing to hide, but it did make me late for work. Hmm, football game is on tonight. I will just worry about whether my team is going to win and forget about what is going on around me.Who would be knocking at my door at 3am? What are all of those black vans doing parked outside? Why are all the Department of Homeland Security forces in my front yard. Arrested for what? But that was an essay I wrote for college 10 years ago? Helllllllp!

I have been a huge supporter of the Bush administration during his terms. He has gone to far. This dept. is inextricably linked to him. This is completely totalitarian, it is what Stalin or Mao would do. He is recklessly destroying one of the specific freedoms upon which this country is founded.

"Why are Americans not furious about things like this? Do people even care? And the people who say they are okay with the government spying on them seem to be the same people who believe in conservative ideals like the right to bear arms, which is there to protect ourselves from our own government.Would people really be happy if we had the KGB secret police here? As long as I am doing anything wrong there is nothing for me to worry about right?"We don't approve unfortunatly the power to make these decisions is within the hands of a few thousand people and not those effected by the laws

If they wanted to they could easily have opened it and resealed it without you ever knowing, but instead they opened it, probably at random checked for say... anthrax and then sealed it and let you know tha they did it, might have even been done by a machine. No worse than google indexing your mail for adsense

This has been going on for a long time. That means 9+ years. If you send something internationally it maybe searched by the nation it is leaving and or the nation it is arriving in. It is called customs. It maybe your favorite hobby to blame everything on Bush but it just makes you look like a dumb ass if you don't bother with these things called facts.
