engadget.com — 1TB is a lot. And if you've got $399 to blow, it can be all yours, with Hitachi saying Deskstar 7K1000 shipments have reached "critical mass" this month, after starting out scarce in March. We're guessing if you need one terabyte of data, in a 3.5-inch enclosure, spinning at 7,200 RPM and hooked up to your computer, you know who you are!

The worst thing about a terabyte HD: Having to buy a second terabyte hard drive to back it up.Either that or risk losing a s**tload of data when the inevitable crash occurs.

I already have mine. I got it at MicroCenter in Fairfax,VA last week. So now I got a little under 5TB storage in my NAS/FTP/DistCC box in my closet.I'm officially loving my 16 port 3ware 9650SE-16ML with Raid6. :-)

Yes, it did [before].It's called RAID.and you know why it's more tempting? Improved performance and if a freakin' drive fails, you don't lose all those 471832973 songs you put in it in one blow, because you can simply replace a part of that raid. I would rather have 5x250GB in RAID5 than 1TB, hands down.RAID FTW!!!

I remember when people used to say the same thing about 10 Gig drives.

Deskstar? They should have called it the deathstar. The storage device capable of laying waste to whole DVD collections.

Of course there are ways of making data MORE redundant. They all require burning MORE disk space for that redundancy that CANNOT be used to store data. For 11 500Gig data drives I burn ONE 500Gig parity drive. No 12 disk RAID system you come up with is going to be able to do that unless it has the same level of redundancy I've spoken of and if it stripes it has the SAME issue with having to spin ALL data platters.Sorry, your argument doesn't sway me one bit. ;-)
