appleinsider.com — Though it hasn't yet hit the market, most high school students (84 percent) are already aware of Apple's iPhone device, with a significant number those who are away (25 percent) saying they will fork over the $500 to make one their own, a recent study has shown.

More generalizations that because people are willing to spend money on the iPhone they have absolutely no sense of financial responsibility.....look, how about nobody buys anything expensive ever? That's the solution? Just save all of your money and never buy anything, keep saving and saving and saving.......Look, I agree that people should definitely save more money, but at the same time, why should they also prevent themselves from buying something they really want? I'm spending $500 on the iPhone....yet I manage to contribute $50/wk to my ETrade savings account, and $200/mo to my Sharebuilder Roth IRA....I save as well as spend. I understand that yea if a person can come up with $500 to spend on a phone, they damn well better be contributing at least that much to some type of savings...Please stop generalizing...not all teens, or people in general are financially uneducated...

When you list its mediocre features like that, it becomes a pretty convincing argument that it ain't worth several hundred quid. To me, at least.

I think if you interchanged iPhone with PS3, you would've have seen similar results pre-PS3 launch. Furthermore, I suspect many of these kids or they're parents aren't yet aware that $500 is pre data & voice plans. Kinda makes the PS3 seem like a bargin eh?

"High school teens say they'll plunk down $500 for iPhone"I asked my 4 year old and he says he would pay $16,000,000 for one.

@ macmaniac23:"9% is about 10%, which is 1/10.300+ million people in the US, divided by 10=30 million, 3 times more than Apples estimated sale by the end of 2008, sounds good to me."Since the iPhone will be a Cingular exclusive, and there are 56.3 million Cingular subscribers (<a class="user" href="http://www.informationweek.com/mobility/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198800153)">http://www.informationweek.com/mobility/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198800153)</a> - which is roughly 1/6 of the US population - Apple will only get half of their estimated sales goals of 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 if we follow your criteria.

@macmaniacDo you have any sense of saving for a car, or car insurance? Do you have any idea how much it costs to make by in this world? $600 is probably your parents' disposable income each month. Good luck when your dad can only get you a 5 year old car, and you have no money to pay for the rest of it.

$500 for, music device + phone, something most people already have.... We all now that these articles are published to cause hype and get the iphone on peoples minds... Realistically i don't think the iphone will be too big of a hit! Why? well 'cause the iphone won't identify with the avg cell phone user...the price alone will deter. Now for the power user... well their palm or blackberry does its job just fine... and the apple keyboard will be more cumbersome than actual keys...The only big wow factor this phone has is the large storage + mp3 function; something most competitors will soon enough follow - that with a lower price tag.But realize that Apple does have a loyal following; unfortunatly, i don't think it will be big enough to make the iphone the top selling phone on the market. I maybe wrong but only time will tell!I will tell you this that when price does drop to below $200 i will buy. But over 200 for a phone today is ridic... cause for 500 you can buy a laptop, today and a cell phone for free... wheres the logic APPLE ... someone please tell does it make logical sense

I am in high school, and I plan on getting a summer job just for it. There is no way in hell my parents would buy me anything this expensive, let alone even my own clothes unless they are from k-mart or something.I don't know why we are getting ragged on so much, not all of us have rich parents or are stupid, just a fairly big majority.
