I've been listening to metal since I was 11 (I'm now 32) and have been in the upper range, although I've constantly f**ked things up at exams. But I'd say that metallers seem to be pretty much like everyone else. It's just that the metallers you really notice tend to be those who are very concerned with what they wear and maybe not so concerned with other things. So sometimes, I think they're all brainless and narrow minded, but other times I just got to love them because they're intelligent and open minded. But those who are intelligent usually don't or can't wear lots of spikes if you get the point. On a metal forum that I frequent a lot, I've noticed that polls show that they politically tend to be similar to the rest of the populace. Intelligence levels are difficult to measure, because many of them join at the age of 14-16 and aren't really as smart as they will be ten years down the road.I wouldn't make so much out of this, but I do think that Punks and Goths should get down from their high horses. ( therightclique got everything wrong, so he can't be too intelligent at least. )

Couldn't help myself, had to add more. Just for fun, I actually went through all the comments here. Out of 227 (last count), maybe 4 readers (including me) were critical of the study. 4 out 227: that's 1.7%! And almost all of us listen to metal!! Holy smokes!!! Link?Nah. If being intelligent includes critical thinking, I'd say that this study is pretty much refuted right there. And I won't even bother with the comments.

I'm not gonna brag about my intelligence, but I'm pretty smart even by adult standards. I listen to metal, but all my friends listen to a wide variety of genres. I would say though that most of the rap/hip-hop fans I know aren't the brightest people in the world. I don't think musical preference can be proven by statistics. It's about who you are, and not everyone conforms to a peer group, and not everyone can be expected to likea certain genre. I will say that, despite what you may think, metal is by far the most technical modern genre out there today. It may SOUND like a bunch of chords, bu just try playing it. So there is a chance that smarter people like the technicality, as I myself do. Other than that...it's the TELEGRAPH, people.

ACDC is not metal. I don't know how to categorize myself in terms of being gifted, but I guess you could say that I was your stereotypical school nerd who won lots of academic awards and skipped freshman year of college. Like alot of others in my situation, I was always under quite a high amount of pressure academically (and still am). I started listening to metal because it really helped to relieve it and I stuck with it because there's many good artists who write intelligent, complex songs and I really like the fantasy elements of power metal.

Not just that, but most mainstream music is also, IMO, kinda dumb. I remember having to put up with the most repetitive, unoriginal, and annoying song that blared over a radio for my meals in my uni's dining halls for several days in a row. Alot of metal, on the other hand, features more intelligent stuff that draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources, such as Dune, Edgar Allen Poe, folk and classical music.
