People who smoke are generally less health-conscious than non-smokers, I'd imagine. There's also probably a large variety of other personality traits that attract a person who smokes to overeating or not caring about their weight.

Oh good, something to blame for my fat ass. It wasn't all that f**king food I consumed under free will, it was the fact that I smoked at an early age and it FORCED me to become fat. I love having a scapegoat. As long as I am not to blame for my actions. Thanks Science guys!

As others have pointed out, a willingness to smoke heavily might be an indication that there is a general lack of concern about health. But something else to consider is that smokers, at least in the U.S., tend to be less educated and have lower incomes. That same group has a much higher incidence of obesity than the better-educated, more affluent members of our society. They typically know less about nutrition and could not tell even fathom a guess as to how many calories they should be consuming, the maximum percentage that should be from fat, or how many are contained in that Big Mac and large fries that they are planning to wolf down at lunch.
