As great as Ledger's performance was, I am actually rooting for Robert Downey, Jr. I think he did an equally excellent job, given the role he had. I also would find it hilarious for an Oscar to go to an actor in blackface.
It is likely that I'll be dugg down for this... But am I the only one that found Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker boring? Compared to previous portrayals of Joker on the big screen, Ledger's is more serious, but I found his constant lip-smacking and antics not interesting at all. Basically he spent the whole movie bumbling and mumbling about while acting "crazy" but there was never any tension present to give his actions that "extra kick". Whenever he did something it was just like, "he's taken hostages now...why has he taken hostages?," or "he blew up something....uh, yay?". The foundation of all his actions, his relationship to the persona of Batman, just wasn't developed or real enough. As a result, everything he said and did was just "meh". Add to the fact that his comic-book toys, guns, gadgets, traps, and his general circus-'esque' insanity were all missing, (this was supposed to be what Joker would be like in "real life", after all) all that's left is an uninteresting, dull-colored, two-dimensional character raving about his obsession with an equally pathetic vigilante (I won't get started on the mundane portrayal of Batman). So...basically I don't understand why the Dark Knight and Ledger's performance have been raved about so much. Just my opinion.
Dude, that's only the movie that gave him his break. He also starred in a little film called Brokeback Mountain. He stole every scene he was in in Lords of Dogtown, Monster's Ball, The Patriot, The Brothers Grimm, and did an amazing job in a little movie called Candy that he did a couple years back.
Heath Ledger's Amazing Films:The Dark KnightBrokeback MountainThe PatriotCandyI'm Not ThereMonster's BallHonorable Mention:The Brothers Grimm (very underrated, especially with Matt Damon and Heath together)A Knight's Tale (great mindless popcorn movie)The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (It's hard to imagine it not being pretty awesome, with all of the great talent involved.)Also, he alone made 10 Things I Hate About You watchable. So yes, you are the only one who is sick of hearing about him. He was a once a generation talent that was lost far, far too early.
Depp as Sparrow should have won that year, though. Seems like Sean Penn only accepts roles if he knows he's going to be nominated for them ahead of time.

Same here... apparently it's wrong to think he deserves this kind of recognition
