Have you looked closely at the estimate you're quoting? Try looking at the causes of death. Take a look at the number of suicide bombings and car bombs. You're not paying attention to the difficulty in distinguishing "civilian" from "combatant." If a guy has no official connections to Al-Queda or the Taliban, but is holding an AK-47 and shooting at Americans, what is he?When someone is trying to kill you, it doesn't matter much what group's colors he wears. Do you think that guy's family gives a s**t whether someone was Talibam or not, if he was trying to kill their husband/father?
Some people care enough about their families to make some sacrifices to keep them safe. Think what you want about this war... but if you are in the military you can't just pick which war you want to fight in.
I'd tell him "sorry, that really is awful and I can't imagine the hardship you have/will go through but that wasn't worth it, you shouldn't have been there and I won't renounce principles simply for emotional appeals. You didn't deserve to have that happen; neither do any of them."Probably though we would shout at each other. Understanding is hard.
