huffingtonpost.com — Responding to the right-wing suggestion that if Stephen Hawking was in England under their socialized medicine he wouldn't have a chance. Idiots, he is English. From England Hawkins replied, "I wouldn't be here today if it were not for the NHS,"

when was there a medical insurance industry that wasn't regulated heavily? regulation has clearly failed as it always does, but an unregulated capitalist industry has never existed.sometimes people need to be reminded of a few things. it is obvious that any company in any industry will gladly f**k over their workers, their customers, and the environment in the name of money if whatever they do to f**k whatever over won't impact their profits negatively. but they won't do it if it will hurt their profits. and that's where competition comes in. if f**king over their workers makes their workers jump ship, they won't do it. if f**king over their customers will make their customers jump ship, they won't do it. if f**king over the environment will lose them workers or customers or investors, they won't do it. but it is easier for people to regulate, and that's why regulation happens. it just isn't as effective, is costlier, stifles innovation, and strips people that might not actually be doing any harm of their rights. it also often runs contrary to competition. whenever regulation makes it harder for a company to join an industry, the existing companies have that much less reason to worry about what happens if they f**k someone or something over.and if people are forced to compete, they can raise the quality of life for the human race faster than any other force in the world. so yes, obviously the insurance companies are going to do a piss poor job at insuring people, because everyone's insurance is tied to their job, and even if it wasn't, there would still be a very limited number of insurance companies people could choose from. but stop giving them government protections from competition, stop telling people the government is capable of keeping the insurance industries in line, and take a bit of responsibility for yourself, and these companies will turn their acts right around.

I don't see any of my 6 points have been debunked. Interesting that you equate not failing miserably to a success.

You want to take Stephen Hawking's word for it: he's one step away from going Skynet on your asses

The NHS is a fine institution - criticism from a country that turns away patients from hospital doors because they don't have adequate insurance??? woeful, ludicrous nonsense... Get this American cousins - in the US system if you have a brain tumor chances are you will be left at home to die because your insurance won't cover it. In the UK you will be given immediate attention for free... what is there to even discuss???

Pure capitalism is superior to moderate capitalism. Thinking that capitalist policies would lead to 19th century conditions is absolutely idiotic. You can't conclude that adopting pure capitalism would lead to the same conditions that existed last time pure capitalism was attempted 120 years ago.Society was horribly poor back then, and people had to work long hours to survive. If children didn't work, families would starve. Per capita income was just too small to allow for a high average standard of living. Even if the government had wanted to, it wouldn't have been able to afford social services to cover any significant portion of the population. Government revenues were just too small. Furthermore, the US had a higher standard of living than any other country in the world, and it had the most free market economy.
