web.mac.com — I recently volunteered for Operation Photo Rescue and WE NEED HELP... All,I had hoped to begin distribution today (Wed 5/03), but to say that we have been swamped is an understatement. During the whole week that we initially spent in Pass Christian, MS, we gathered 500 photos from around 50 or so families...

I thought about that, but I didn't want to label these families as 'Katrina Families' or victims, that's almost derogatory. NOLA seemed like the next best thing as that's where the collection was taking place at the time I posted this. And if you didn't know what NOLA was before, you do now! ;-)

Yes, the wheels are moving slowly at this point. I know Dave, et. al. are doing their best. It took me a couple weeks to get my first email reply from OPR (see original post), so don't fret if you don't hear anything right away. Thanks for your help! John

Here is the response I got when I asked what the ETA was for the first round of pics. If you want to be put on the top of the list, please send your sample work per the email below:There's a couple of steps that I need to set up first. It's not just a matter of sending us an email and we give you a picture. Like I said on the blog, quality control has been a major issue. I would need to "process and screen" each volunteer before I put them into action. Right now, that's not the top priority at this moment, since I have already processed volunteers waiting to work. The response from the Digg people has been great, but I have over 600 new volunteer e-mails to go through in addition to processing the images that we collected this past week, going back to work and catching up with my wife and toddler son. If they want to make the process speedier and get an immediate reaction, have them send a brief statement about their experience and skill level along with a before and after example of a restoration work to volunteer@OperationPhotoRescue.com (PLEASE HAVE THEM USE THIS EMAIL ADDRESS!!! THEY WILL BE THE ONLY ONES TO DO SO WHICH WILL HELP ME TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS). Some of the Digg folks already have sent work samples. I will be contacting those people first.Other than that, I thank each and everyone of them for volunteering and ask for their patience until I can get back to them. I realize that our system of doing things may appear to be inefficient, but there's only four people running this organization on a part-time basis right now.You can also let them know that there is plenty of work to go around. We have over 2,000 images to distribute. Thanks for your help John. Although the response has been overwhelming, having new volunteers always is a big morale boost.Dave EllisOperation Photo Rescue

I am an instructor at a local university here in Austin, Texas and every one of my students are anxious to help. the only problem is that they will be needing some (maybe 12) to start working on soon. I tried to do this for my last class but could never get images. I know everyone is working so hard and it is difficult to keep up with it all. i just want you to know that we are here, ready, willing, and excited to help if you can get us some images. we will even do the printing and send them back completed! i teach retouching and restoration to students who already have a great understanding of photoshop so their skill level would be around medium to high (minor rips, fading, stains, mold, torn corners, etc.) thank you so much for all you are doing and hope to hear from you soon.Carolynwww.carolyncoffey.com

fyi, OPR has launched their online community this week. You can visit www.oprworkshop.org to become involved with a great grass roots project.
