thinkprogress.org — Speaker Hastert first claimed he was made aware of Foley's emails to a young congressional page by media reports on Thursday. He has now admitted he was actually informed last fall. Up until this morning, the top of Hastert's website highlighted the congressman's efforts to "Keep Kids Safe In Cyberspace." That information is now gone.

DUH... Politicians have been grandstanding on child safty for decades. They refuse to pass hate crime or anti-bullying laws but they will pass laws adding more and more jail time to everything imaginable.Let's see how they like living by their own rules.

Someone on slashdot made a comment about how Sumkins(sp?) gave Foley access(interpret that as you will) to the pages even after the first signs of problems revealed themselves back in 2003. So there's your Republican tri-fecta; Foley, Hastert, Sumkins. Why haven't we heard anything about Demmies in the news? No one's going to convince me that Dems are entirely innocent of all wrong-doing. I'm not so ready to agree that the Dems own the media or what have you though because the media did cover Clinton's sex life pretty thoroughly, but it DOES seem odd that corruption on the Dem side seems to not have penetrated the news as pervasively as kiddie-humping republican politicians.

can i just ask why people are so quick to try to deflect blame on this? it should not - to me, it does not - matter what political party these people are assiciated with.left wing - right wing - centrist... these actions are repugnant.

Don't know why people are digging you down, dude. Some Democrat made an irrelevant, fallacious post just eight months ago and people seem to have stopped digging his comment down. What an unfair world...

is it just me or does anyone else think if we knew the truth it would turn out that ALOT of these politician/elitist assh**es are really sick pedophiles?
ucbrave92Oct 3, 2006
i am just saying, if they knew about this for this long and it is common knowledge that people in these types of positions are more likely to be pedophiles, what else are they covering up? this has to be just about the most corrupt i think our government has ever been.

Although you are right that he did get a pardon, it wasn't a full pardon. He spent 48 months in prison then another 48 in a half-way house.

Its not the truth, but it is truthy. Your facts are partially correct. Im not going to say that Mel Reynolds isnt a piece of s**t but get your story straight. He wasn't pardoned. He served nearly 2/3rds of his sentence in prison and then had his sentence commuted where he served the remainder in a halfway house. He has been effectively blackballed from participating in politics or any sensitive job ever again. You are either trying to draw a parallel or muddy the argument with irrelevant history. We aren't talking about any past president or congressman. We are talking about what looks like a possible cover-up by SITTING OFFICIALS of a pedophiles actions for political gain.
