technology.guardian.co.uk — Maybe it has, if you care about your privacy. There's no doubt that Google does care about your privacy, and aims to protect it. Earlier this year, for example, it refused to release anonymous search data demanded by the US government for a study, even though other search engines meekly handed it over.

Firstly the AOL thing was a complete series of screwups not least of which was not randomizing the information and that it was posted publicly. To my knowlege, Google has many safeguards against this information being seen by the public. But beyond that we've been being tracked for years by credit cards, checks, phone records, swipe cards, even fast passes for commuting. There are cameras everywhere as well as face recognition software(don't try to pull anything hinky in a Casino in Vegas). Unless you choose to live off the grid, this is pretty much a fact of life.

@cronotThe problem with the whole 'giving privacy to people who don't deserve it' claim is the simple question of who are you to decide who can and cannot have privacy? The only way to make sure those who 'don't deserve privacy' don't have it is to remove it from everyone. Punishing everyone because there are a few who take advantage of something is stupid. I'm sorry, but I am not one of the sheeple that is willing to give up my privacy and freedom for the illusion of security.

Funny, I was waiting for a "However, ..." in the introduction.

There is nothing evil about wanting to make as much money as you possibly can. The fact that Google archives my searches doesn't make them evil. It's still the best search engine on the web, and as long as that remains true, I'll be using Google.
