examiner.com — In Alaska's Denali National Park, a hiker shot and killed a grizzly bear he claims was charging his companion. While the self-defense claim remains to be investigated, it is certainly plausible, and certain details lend the claim credence. If true, one or perhaps two human lives have almost certainly been saved by the rule change.

Right. Because thats what gun toting criminals do..they drive way the hell out to a national park, pay the entrance fee (smarter criminals already bought a golden eagle pass) then..uh..profit somehow. Somewhere along the way they murder a couple of hikers too. Happens all the time, but the lamestream media doesn't report it. I tell you its a liberal conspiracy to cover up how much crime occurs in national parks (which should really be called socialist parks). What should really happen is these socialist parks should be turned over to private companies who will manage the land better.

They always comment like crazy on these sorts of stories.

I don't know if it's accurate, but wikipedia has a list of deaths from bear attacks. It's a small enough number per year that no real statistical analysis can be done with the data.

I do think the shotgun approach is a good idea for home defense in a suburban setting. It is far less likely to project through your neighbor's house.

I came here just to look for this comment. Thanks.

10mm auto has nearly twice the muzzle energy of .45ACP, and retains more even at 100 meters. It has superior sectional density, so when loaded with 200gr hardcasts it will penetrate deeply into large, dangerous predators when used for self defense. When loaded with 135gr hollowpoints traveling at ~1600FPS from a stock Glock 20, the round will expand to twice its diameter and transfer all energy within a foot of ballistic gelatin. Basically, it is an entirely different class of performance than .45 ACP. So yes, compared to 10mm auto .45 ACP is for girls. Also the Heer carries 9mm pistols. The Heer (German Army) is a conscripted, not professional, force and as such is pretty much a joke. This has been demonstrated by ongoing weight problems, problems of combat effectiveness and general s**tbagging whenever I've had the poor fortune of being downrange with them. I would not cite anything they do as evidence of badassness. Just a little bit of information for you there big expert.I forgive you for being a piteous fool.

Forgive me for saying so, but I do not think you have much experience shooting handguns because you do not need or want a scope to aim a handgun quickly at ranges <25m. Yes, you do need to be a half decent shot. Conversely, you're an irresponsible twit if you're packing anything into the woods you are going to trust your life on if you have not put at least a hundred or so rounds downrange with it in order to become somewhat proficient and familiar with your weapon. You're missing the main thrust of what I said though. The poster said shotguns loaded with slugs are the only effective bear defense, and all handguns including S&W 500 are useless. What I was saying is that he could not be more wrong, the best woods carry gun is a carbine length rifle of an appropriate caliber, then one of the MANY (not just S&W 500) appropriate pistol calibers (I carry a 10mm auto with 200gr WFNGC harcasts) which will not only outperform a shotgun for on target affect but be handier and there for more likely to be carried and used. A shotgun is the last thing I would carry. Its almost guaranteed to be even longer than a rifle but doesn't even have the on target effect in this application of a pistol.
