So I just whipped out the old veterinary behavior text...and here we go:A "smile" is a variation of a submissive grin. When rewarded (with attention or even laughter) will continue. REWARDED!
care about highlighting what the problems with the pointing experiment were, and how you conclude is learned behavior, especially when done with 3 month old naive pups and wolfs pups as control? Maybe you also want to report that somewhere else than digg. And is not about emotion: is about dogs being able to use human clues and understand intentionality, showing a high degree of social cognition. And I'm pretty sure that if you are able to replicate it with cats, you'd also a nice article in Science. Good luck.
I don't think the dog gives a s**t... in the dog's mind, it probably thinks it's doing some lame trick just to please its owner. But of course, if the owner wants to believe that the dog enjoys it, the owners will convince themselves that the dog enjoys it.
