If we picked just one toolkit, we'd be stuck with whatever is s**tty about that particular one. We can standardize when one of them all-around doesn't suck.

I don't buy dell, they make up low ranger computers but that's not the point. When it goes into real world it means it's getting some recognition and it seems like walmart gave up ubuntu l0l

Ahhh, but that's my point. The average Joe isn't necessarily "dedicated" to Windows. Joe simply doesn't give a damn about another OS unless it can meet those 5 requirements. At the end of the day, most people in the business world use Windows and Office to help them get their next paycheck. I work for a company that employs tens of thousands of people, and they all use Office, just like every other company I've ever worked at in the past decade. I even tried to deploy Open Office at one company, and the response was venomous, even with a support plan, because people simply didn't know what it was and didn't want to risk a productivity loss. They opted to spend more money on Office, which they saw as a sound investment. While a less expensive alternative always sounds good, its not worth the gamble unless they know they are going to be able to rely on it the way they rely on Windows OR a Mac. To Joe, a Mac is a reasonable alternative, which is why it is starting to gain more market-share, especially since Vista was released. It meets all five of those criteria, and if they discover new benefits or great new programs from working with Mac that they didn't have on Windows then that's all the better. I'm not saying Windows over Linux, I'm saying Linux simply isn't perceived as a viable option for valid business reasons. Joe isn't dedicated, he's just more concerned about his bottom line. If Linux could provide those five things and raise its public profile through some marketting then I think it could break through that barrier, but that would probably require a hefty investment and make it hard to keep it a free product (Ex. Red Hat & Suse), which sort of defeats the point.

If your dream is to own a iMAC and can't yet pay for one, just get Linux on a PC, cost very little if anything, I would still pay a fee for it to get support. Its similar to OS-X which is based on BSD a form of UNIX. If the GUI is what is important there are themes that work perfectly Check out Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC it makes my Laptop and Net book look like the Apple I decided not to buy. One day we will see a emulator like wine for OS-X.. Linux is becoming very inclusive check out http://www.bonlinux.com/68231.html there are Ubuntu versions for all. Soon Google will come out with a OS based on Linux called Android that is reported to take on Windows 7 on desktops, Android is now in Cell phones such as the G1 and may be ported to Desktops. Linux is already in 83% of the server market, and one reason for that is its stable, you just can't say that about Windows, one reason so many companies move away from it on thier servers.
