"Virtua Fighter 5? Eh. Dead or Alive 4, released over a year ago, is said to be a better fighting game. VF's graphics are worse, too. But if you prefer its fighting mechanics, I guess it might be worth a look. I'm personally not interested."WTF, DoA is a joke. VF's gameplay is far more deeper than DoA. DoA is only good for eye-candy.
What Halo 2 release date fiasco? The only fiasco was from gaming sites and gamestores who were giving out incorrect dates, dates that were NOT from Bungie.Bungie only had one release date for Halo 2 and Bungie met that date.Don't blame Bungie because some gamestore wants to suck pre-order money from people so they can make money off the interest.
Please forgive the absurd length of this post and my hair brained style:My Imperfect Halo 3 BETA impressions:If you're not really into Halo, or don't plan on getting Halo 3, turn back now. This is somewhat in-depth impression of one guy's experience with the BETA (my students are testing today, so I have some time to type).I am very busy this week, so I've only played about 15 matches, but I've gotten a good taste of the game thus far and here's what I can offer without spending an inordinate amount of time writing. First of all, the game PLAYS WONDERFULLY. It's incredibly smooth from a game play vantage (and it still has 5 months in production!) and offers better game balance than Halo 2. Even with all of the new weapons and equipment options it's both accessible and new at the same time. Since I played quite a bit of Halo 1 back in the day, I really appreciate the balance in game play they have struck between H1 and H2. It's more about using grenades to weaken opponents shields and then killing them with either a BR or an AR (battle rifle/assault rifle). Melee attacks are also more effective than they were in H2 which hearkens back to days of yonder. The new game play options, and I'm referring to everything from the new vehicles, equipment, "man cannons" (yeah, that sounds suspect, I know) and stat tracking add a whole new dimension of fun BUT don't take away from the Haloishness of the combat. The mongoose is a lot of fun but I've used it primarily to get from point A to point B because you're just a bullet sponge if you drive into combat since you can't fire while riding it. With a passenger on the back, it's a very key ingredient in object based games. Just last night we embarrassed the other team in an Assault match by planting the bomb within the first two minutes. I had everybody go right and I drove the bomb carrier to the left. We had our sniper take out the dude standing atop their base with the big rocket launcher thing and then we rolled in and planted. They should have at least put a trip mine in near the place where you plant the bomb. Ha! I recorded that match with the video recorder BUT the crappy thing is that if I sent it to another Beta player he'd have to watch the whole video, at least up to that point, because they won't have the robust feature set in until launch. At that point you'll be able to edit, pause, rewind/ff, zoom in, switch players POV, etc. I CAN'T WAIT!The equipment is really cool. Bubble shields are fun and are more practical in objective based games like capture the flag. The grav lift is very fun, but it will take time to figure out practical applications. Right now jumping over the wall of a closed base is one good one. Trip mines seem dumb until you start racking up double kills by placing them in front of the door of a base and the opposing team's convoy pulls up and BLAM! It's nice to get a kill when you're off like 2 miles away having a baloney sandwich and then you see your medal pop up (double kill, killed the flag carrier, etc.)Then there are the "man cannons" which propel you away from your base, high into the air. These are fun because you can take a ride in a vehicle, toss grenades, explosives (fusion cores), weapons, etc. into them and watch them fly off. There are already crazy videos of people throwing a sticky grenade into one after a team takes off with on and then the grenade lands on the vehicle as makes impact with the ground and BUH-LAM! (; Mainly, however, they are great because you get launched into the combat faster. Just watch out for snipers though. It's annoying to get head-shotted and watch your lifeless body fly through the air because you know that guy is just snickering. The sound in the game is amazing! One of the best things about the game. I won't go into a ton of detail, but when you hear gun fire in the distance you can actually tell what weapon the person is using. The BR and turrets sound the coolest, with snipers coming in a close second.Unlike many others, right off the bat I was underwhelmed by the graphics. I should say that I am playing the game in HD on a late model LCD TV (Sharp Aquos...one of the better LCD manufacturers) so I am seeing the game as it should be seen. A lot of people have flamed me for saying the graphics are not the best, but trust you me, I am a huge Bungie/Halo fanboy so I'm not being unfair or biased. Now, if you're a console gamer you'd probably think, "Wow, this is pretty nice!" But if you play PC games in high resolution on a regular basis or have spent some time in some other "next-gen" games such as GRAW, GOW, etc.), then nothing is going to blow you away in this Beta. Sure there is some VERY nice lighting, textures (bump mapping), animations, etc. BUT there is simply not the jump you'd expect going from a Celeron based (733Mhz PIII) Xbox to a triple-core next-gen monster of a console that has EIGHT TIME THE RAM (that's right, Xbox had 64 while the 360 has 512MB of shared memory). The visuals are HD, there is some wonderful detail, but nothing like some of the renders they have been putting out or like the E3 trailer. I don't think there is full AA running, so many of the blatant jaggies and other things are going to change before launch. I guess after Gears of War, we all want that same ridiculous graphical quality which simply isn't possible considering the networking issues involved in making up to 16 players play in a high speed environment with so my dynamic things going on such as vehicles, physics, etc. Now, I do understand this is a BETA, but I honestly expected more. I don't know what, but I expected MORE of whatever it is that makes some games just POP with detail. HOWEVER, the more I've played it, the more I appreciate the graphics and the less I care. *I just remind myself that they have FIVE MONTHS of POLISHING. I know they're going to do A LOT of lighting and texture related improvements. I mean, there are things in Halo 2 that look better, including animations, SO YOU KNOW they are going to be adding these in over the next few months. Also, I did notice some very minor jitters and frame rate issues, as well as networking issues, but NOTHING significant. The game still has a lack of fluidity sometimes when panning, but chalk that up to it being a build as opposed to the "golden code." I will say this before moving on: I'd rather have these kinds of graphics than have a game that is slow or broken. I am just reporting as objectively as possible...but since graphics are subjective, then check it out for yourself.Weapons: I am still a BR "whore." I will always grab a BR or a Carbine. In fact, in many situations I think H3's Covenant Carbine is as good as, if not better, a choice for mid to long range engagements. May favorite thing to do on Snowbound in Rumble Pit is to hang around on the periphery and just pick of people as they fight one another with my Carbine or BR. I have consistently finished in the top three spots in Rumble by doing this in the handful of games I've played on Snowbound. The shotgun has been changed. It's rate of fire is slower, as is the capacity of the tube (it annoys me when people say the magazine because it shotguns generally don't have a magazine, they have a cylindrical tube in which the shells are slid into and then a spring pushes them back into the loader to be chambered, but that's just my 1337 weapons knowledge nipping at my heels). So the shotty is...different.The laser cannon cool, and I have had some great kills with it, but I still prefer to my BR, Covenant Carbine or Sniper. Oh, the AR is very cool...but it lacks that "punchy pop" sound and feel it had in Halo 1 and wish they'd throw that back in. Oh, and the needler doesn't actually suck!I am too lazy to describe all of the other weapons, but the spikers aren't that great in my opinion and while the SMGs are cool, nothing to write home about. I haven't touched the new covenant rifle. THE MAIN THING about the weapons now is that they seem to be more evenly matched. Gone are the days of hunting around the map for a BR or some other decent weapon. With a good grenade toss or a surprise leap behind someone you can wreak havoc with almost any weapon. Thank you Bungie. Finally, stat tracking is WAY better, with a kill/death spread which is very helpful to see who is really doing well and not just killing a lot and dying a lot. And medals...goodness! I love see medals and now you can zoom in and actually see Overall, the game is going to be great, in fact it already is. Throw in a full set of maps and I'd pay $60 for it as a multiplayer only game. If you're on the fence about getting a 360 and you're interested in Halo, I think it's time to drop the bucks on the premium...but get an HDTV first.-DTGamertag: II VALIANT IIOn 5/16/07, David Wilcox wrote:So I may not get a response back quickly since I know you are trying to keep up with the pimple-faced competition, but how is it?
