applematters.com— Not only does this hack let you change the text of the login screen, but gives you a step-by-step to change the general appearance.

Visage also allows you to randomize the login screen background, personalize some of the system alerts ("Hey sexy, are you sure you want to shut down?"), and more! I highly recommend Visage, it makes the customizations quick and easy. But then again, I'm a little biased since it's my app :)
Hacking eq. modding is phun. when there are .apps which make it easier to those who want 'the' job done, fine. only i would like to get a (rough) idea how it is done, the moding that is, and thus i like to say thanks to all who provided details: Thanks! however, i may have overlooked something: i can not figure out how to change the login picture of the "other" user @ startup. scenario: Tiger, one user (eg. "steve") and one "other" (= admin) accounted. "steve" gets a fancy login-icon/pic, but where to change the "other" login-pic. a simple com.user0...tiff change won't do. any idea what .nib to digg?
found it. forget about the comment ^above^. the icon/pic in question is in ~/System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins/loginwindow.bundle/Contents/Resources/DefaultUserIcon.tiff --as became obvious from boot-sequence/scripts detailled elsewhere it is via the init process that the loginwindow.app is given control.

Why would a file be scary-looking. All you need to do is switch some image files around. Otherwise you'd be editing the .nib file and should know what your doing. Personally I think this is one of OS X's strongest points. The developer tools come with EVERY single copy of OS X and everything is made available to the user to modify/hack/customize to their hearts content. They make it the way they want it, the way they thing works best for everyone, but still hand you the tools and power to make it the way YOU want it.Free Mac Mini & iPodhttp://www.macminis4free.com/default.aspx?r=168157http://www.mp3players4free.com/default.aspx?r=7214

Ironically, I just spent 30 minutes changing my Windows login screen to look like OS X. Now I feel like an idiot.
