mckenna only theorizes that synaesthesia came out of stoned apes... there is no evidence to back this one up. as for new sensory organs physically remapping the brain to create novel senses, im not even sure it qualifies as being synaesthesia... i guess its the same as asking "is echolocation the same as hearing?"
rods and cones function because of chemical reactions caused by photons - kind of like how photosynthesis is a chemical reaction involving photons. sight measures light via chemical reaction in the rods and cones on the surface of the retina, and the perception of light (colour and intensity) is because of these (and more) chemical and electrochemical reactions.

It's called synæsthesia, and it's a skill emergent from our evolution from apes that ate psychoactive mushrooms. See Stoned ape theory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_mckenna

Speaking of LSD, are there any recipes or tutorials on how to make it?

Speak for yourself, bub. Resistance is futile...but I, at least, will embrace the enhancement. Bring on the Collective!

Watch the Star Trek episode where Spock meets the Medusan Ambassador and Dr. Miranda Jones. Dr. Jones wore a special sensor web, which allowed her to perceive her environment.http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Miranda_Jones
