electronista.com — HP's slate PC should cost less than an equivalent iPad when it goes on sale, a leak has revealed late on Wednesday. Sources say that an entry version of the Windows 7 tablet with 3G will have similar specs to an iPad but will cost less than the $629 Apple wants to charge.

"They want to sell you an electronic storefront. The iPad is all about you buying things from them, not computing or productivity."The electronic storefront is true, but to say it's the only thing is missing the point too. The iPhone is functional, not just an interface to a store. The iPad will be as well. Of course Apple also develops their own OS and software, and it will be tailored to the device. HP device will run "stock Windows 7". Yeah, as if slapping a desktop OS in there will offer anything close to a custom touch interface experience. I'm sure I'll get dugg down by all the iPad haters, so I'll just say, you wait and see. People will love using this thing and it's going to sell.

Slate's and tablets are two different things (though technically, the tablet you're thinking of is called a convertible). Sure I'd go with a tablet in a heartbeat (already have one... and HP makes one for $800), but as far as slates are concerned, the HP and Apple ones are what I'm comparing.

They probably think they're doing the 'little people' a favor by 'allowing' that functionality.

While I like the Slate better from a tech specs point of view, I keep coming back to the fact that the iPad is going to have a lot more software that is optimized for a touch interface. The Slate is going to have a lot more software, period, by virtue of being a Wintel machine, but for a lot of that, it's going to feel cludgy at best to try to use without a keyboard and mouse. The iPad may not have been the long heralded One Tablet To Rule Them All, but it'll definitely have the best long term end user experience of anything coming out in the Q1/Q2 of this year.

..and people will buy those inferior units and thank Apple for the privilege. It's hard to feel sorry for willing prey.

Flash supported, hp slate 1 iPad 0, Internal speakers Hp Slate 2 iPad 0, Not having to pay for apps, HP slate 3 iPad 0.I could keep going with this, I'm excited to see how well the HP slate does, I've messed around with the iPad, it's nice, but I have an iPod touch and it does pretty much all that the iPad does anyways so waste of my time and money...Go HP slate!
