HP has seen the shifting waters toward Linux Desktops for the same amount of time as Dell and we have. XP, Vista and M$'s spy-ware has made waves large enough to reach the Home Computer user. Not all windows users are as Stupid as M$ might think.Vista also has created 2 different hardware requirements. The first being the Trusted Computing Platform with proprietary hardware that allows M$ to kill competition, MPAA, RIAA and the Government to control the user. The second being the Open Hardware Platform that gives the user back his Freedom. People are not keen on having their Freedoms taken away or not being trusted and those are very reason's M$ is getting pissed on. We, the people have each spent thousands of dollars on music CD's, DVD movies. and hardware to play and enjoy these items and have the right to protect our investment by copying it. We do not have the right to give it away. (My personal collection has cost my wife and I over $12,000 not including hardware.) That's nothing to sneeze at and doesn't include the worthless VHS tapes we own either. HP, Dell (hardware), Linux or Apple (software and hardware) didn't dig the hole that M$ is in right now, M$ dug it them self's for thinking and believing they are God and will rule. That, was a very Bad move!My hats off to the Hardware guys because I know Vista is a headache and large thorn in your butts. Think OPEN !
I don't understand the why people are saying that HP doesn't support Linux now. I just ordered one of their xw9400 Worsktations with RHEL4 preinstalled and working out of the box. Also for those that are complaining their current laptops don't work with Linux I'm sorry to hear that but they were never designed with Linux in mind. There are plenty of models that are certified for Linux so choose one of those. There was even an edition of Ubuntu that was certified on the following models nx6110, nc6120, nc6220, nc6230, nc6000, and the nc4200. Just do your research before you purchase and you should be in good shape.
"Put the heat on MS, Sun, IBM and Apple to do better"Put the heat on Sun to do better than what? For one, you can buy a Sun system with linux preinstalled, and for two Sun makes their own free-software OS... it's licensed under a modified Apache/Mozilla license. Sun was also discovered to be (through heavy use of perl on the debian repository) the biggest corporate contributor to free software in the world, and that's before the GPL'd JDK or OpenSolaris....So, tell me... How could Sun micro. do better?
No where did i say anything about servers, i said in the home. and i am a linux professional and still see once its main stream and in the home it will be come a target. right now its just not worth the trouble. you are under estimating the power of stupid people in front of a computer.

That's real good advice, but they won't take it. So screw them.

I must disagree. Not my choice of distro, but hey, I still get 4+ months of uptime before scheduled reboots.

I'm suspicious of preinstalled Suse. I have a feeling there may be a nasty suprise for the buyers of Novel stuff in the future coz right now, they are in bed with microsoft. The same theme on Russian sites: http://pivo.in.ua http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua
