"I put Ubuntu on an old Toshiba Satellite P300 laptop . . ."So you've ditched a working OS for another which doesn't support your hardware. Well done.

Been an Ubuntu user for about 2 months now, and I've never been happier. I've tried other distros before, but this one has the immediate usability of windows. The other deciding factor was the incredible community behind the browser. Go check out the ubuntu forums if you don't believe me.I posted a question about gnome crashing after I upgraded, and I got two responses within 30 minutes. One of them worked and I am happily using it again. I have yet to say "What the hell just happened?" when I'm running ubuntu. If something screws up, it's because I made it screw up.

Ubuntu seems to be a good distro for noobs, but why doesn't it support wpa "out of the box"? I can't connect to my wireless AP unless I downgrade my security, which I'm not about to do.

I thought Ubuntu WAS for novices to begin with...being easier to use. So is this guid for people that have a hard time even finding the ON button of their computer and wonder where the "any" key is?

Moose_Head, even if he had to compile it himself...Well, Ubuntu doesn't come ready to compile most packages. That's my major gripe: having to get autoconfigure, automake, gcc, and glibc after installating Linux. Those are essential packages, and the last time I tried Ubuntu (Warty Warthog, I admit), they weren't included by default.Aside from that, though, even compiling your own packages is about as involved as using most Windows installers. And there's always a readme file and usually an install file that will tell you exactly what to do to install the program with the default options. Oftentimes, there's a script to do it for you.The problem is, people haven't learned how to do this, and many of them don't want to learn a new operating system. A lot of people are adverse to learning, and many others don't have the time. Besides, since Windows is pretty much required these days, learning Linux is an extra effort.

I want to build a box with linux on it to run as a fileserver, and I'd also like to use it to download bit-torrents. I would like it to stay in my closet and I would just remote into it to tell it which torrents to download. Would Ubuntu work well for this, or is there another linux distro I should be looking at?

the irony is how one wouldn't be able to connect to their network to download wifi radar ... although an easy fix would be to shut off wpa until it downloads ... but yeah...
