I did this in my apartment, which had lofted ceilings. If you mix fiberglass resin and sand you can make your own holds relatively inexpensively, and in what ever shape/size you want. But as they say, climbing walls are like methadone to the junky, it takes the edge off but it's not the real thing...

I disagree somewhat ... some of the best times we have are in someone's basement just f**king around on a wall. It's way more social than the climbing gym, less competition (pushing is all fine and dandy but sometimes it just makes it not fun. While inspirational, it can also be so demoralizing to watch a guy climb a V9 and then take your turn struggling up a V4)

This page is worth it just for the link at the bottom to the guy who put holds onto a dead tree in his backyard. Nuts. Home gyms are for training. There aren't fun if that is the only thing you do. They exist to give you something to do when drunk on a rainy day.
