tallin.wordpress.com — HBO sent my ISP, Charter Communications, a letter stating that they believe I've been downloading "copyrighted television programs through a 'peer-to-peer' service, including such titles as The Sopranos." Scanned copy of the two-page letter included.

HBO gets angry at you for downloading their show and uses the legal recourses available to them? Holy f**k!Not that I'm bothered by piracy or agree with HBO that you should only watch their shows when they say you should, but how is this a story? Come on, now.

You can get fined or go to jail for copyright infringement?! Wow, when did that start happening? Up until now the uploading of copywritten works to the internet was a civil matter, not a criminal one. Guess someone changed the laws in the USA while I wasn't looking...;-)

This doesn't apply to just The Sopranos. I got busted for download episode 3 of Big Love. Same letter, but came through in email. My provider is Cox. What's interesting is that this happened *the day* i switched from BitTornado (where I had a random selection of ports) to uTorrent (whose default port is 32459). I don't think it's related, just interesting.Anyone who got busted, have you been able to continue downloading non-HBO stuff off of Bittorrent? not sure if you get put on some watched "s**t list" by your ISPRelated link:http://www.kanai.net/weblog/archive/2005/08/29/15h13m51s

the means these companies use to acquire your information, isn't this a privacy violation? furthermore i believe these companies are in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Use mIRC. Only download from someone that you know is legit, and if you want to share, set your fserve to serve to voices and ops only.

Watch the Sopranos on demand!

If you have a legal opportunity to view the material you want to watch, consider setting up a Knoppmyth box - it's a free linux-based PVR that will keep you out of LOTS of legal trouble. I installed it on an old junk computer and never miss anything I'm interested in watching now. (www.mysettopbox.tv)

Same think happened to me and my ISP (cavtel) cut my service without warning for supposedly downloading an HBO program. They restored it, but I have two more warnings before it is terminated. I had to call customer service to find out the reason, since they claim in the TOS that they don't have to tell me.

Just got a call from my isp for downloading Deadwood, HBO’s been watching. This brings up another point, though I stopped downloading music off of bittorrent a while back, is it possible that the RIAA could still have that info and are just waiting to subpoena? Or are you in the clear if you havent heard anything thing in months?

i just got azureus, too slow so i changed to utorrent, which then wouldn't work after one download. We tried to fix the port forwarding which can't be done on my modem very easily. My utorrent then appeared in a foreign language. I now give up.

and this has nothing to do with the article

If very rich people were the main users of torrents then nobody would be threatening them with lawsuits and jail time and anti-piracy laws would only include a small fine for violations.
