wzachjordan.typepad.com— Here is a copy of the email sent to me from my ISP after HBO caught me downloading the latest episode of Entourage. Who knew that HBO would be watching?

This happened to a friend of mine a few years back (back when Kazaa was popular and actually was a good method of file transfer) after he downloaded American Pie 2. He received a letter from his ISP (Bellsouth I beleive it was) and he didn't even realize he was sharing it, since he moved all of his donwloads as soon as they finished.
FYI... PeerGuardian will not stop the information from being gathered, nor will proxy servers or any other "magic protection" that anyone here has listed as using. If you want to be safe, don't download anything you are not legally allowed to own. And TV shows are not something you can claim ownership of, regardless of whether you have a subscription or whatever else you think is proof that you should be able to download a show. When you subscribe to HBO, it gives you the right to access their satellite/cable feed and view their content, it does NOT give you the right to back it up, archive it or in any other way OWN a copy of the shows you watch.Just something you should all know from someone who should know.
Seriously, PeerGuardian and similar blacklists give a false sense of security. Sure, they do decrease your chances of getting a C&D letter (on the principle that you're not outrunning the RIAA/MPAA/ETC but rather your fellow file sharers), but you think the anti-piracy people can't afford to obtain as many unknown ip addresses as they want?
I got the same type of letter from charter but it was from Microsoft. I was using Azureus with the SafePeer plugin and PeerGuardian. I got busted for longhorn and charter sent the same type of letter. There has to be a better way to get stuff. I am happy to see this Digg so I can relate. I feel your pain!!! Nice Digg!!!
If you use COX and get caught with HBO content, they will shut down your internet until you call them. COX is owned by Time/Warner, who owns HBO.I wish there was competition for Cable....
wow, i'm also super glad this doesn't seem to happen here in canada.....i s'pose 30mil ppl aren't worth worrying about. here's my beef:i own EVERY hbo show on dvd, bought and paid for. Sopranos Seaons 1 was defective, lost the reciept and couldn't take it back - as far as i'm concerned, unless hbo is gonna personally send me a new copy, they owe me. i couldn't be a better customer.f**k hbo/time/warner and their greedy ways. good thing their programming is going to crap so i don't feel compelled to support it.
i agree, it's not as if i'm selling it for profit or making vast amounts of copies. i merely lend out my own. everyone can say what they want about these shows and who has the rights to what....but the truth is, hbo has enough money. if anyone deserves it, it's the ppl making/direnting/producing these shows. same goes for the music biz. out of an $90 sopranos box set, how much goes to hbo and how much goes to the ppl that actually worked on a season for two years??? just something to think about...
Yeah I got the same fate only a warning though (For Entourage). But I hope HBO is going to be happy this has lead me to sample and BUY the dvd sets as I don't have HBO. I'll just be WAAAY more careful this time don't touch the hot stuff (that I wasn't up to date on being hot as of recent). Still going to DL. :)

He has a PC though, it's just a more expensive model. Install windows; you can get windows 7 free for now.
