forums.macrumors.com— Thread: He sent his MacBook in for repair at CompUSA, and when he got it back, it had someone else's hard drive in it. Where is his drive? What will Apple and CompUSA do next? See here to find out.

CompUSA and Apple Retail Stores do repairs for Apple computers purchased anywhere. Yes that includes eBay but don't call Apple to return the thing. It's not eBay or the person you got it from. Also You always want to have the Apple Protection Plan for your computer. You will regret not buying it and if you've had it for less than a year you may still be able to purchase it.
#1 problem here... you let a retail store with no idea what IT means touch the laptop (CompUSA, Best Buy Circuit City)."Mr Smith... your um...I..*hey Charlie whats the name of this thing again*..Oh yeah ID..E cable was fine... but the rest of your computer was broken, so we replaced all the parts and formated your hard drive.. that will be $899.00"-Retail Computer Repair Store calling Customer.
Oh dear - I misread the title. I've just wasted an hour reading the forum post to see what the issue was with the GAY sending their MacBook in and now I find it was just a GUY. There wasn't even any GAY stuff happening. I was hoping for a bit of carpetmuching. No one even got it up the s**tter! No one was lifting shirts. This guy was totally safe to bend over and pick the soap up in front of! Thanks for wasting my time.
"personally, I would take it to court. I know with legal fees it could be expensive, but If you could convince the judge that all your "intangible, irreplaceable, and important data has been lost"worth a shot..."I know I am commenting late on this but no, it's not. When you sent it out you signed an agreement saying that you had no sensitive information on the drive and that everything was backed up, and that if that information was lost or compromised for WHATEVER reason, they are not liable for it. In short, you'r screwed, always read the fine print :(
To Jstevewhite:After your stupid comment, I was compelled to respond. You're an idiot. Yeah, if your hard drive is swapped or something, you just "restore". Are you retarded? You realize all the transient data, unless never touching your physical hard drive, is actually readily accessible by even s**tty freeware for Windows, right? That files aren't deleted, merely the index for them, and all the data is sitll there? Your comment about the NSA is histarical. You can delete your files all day long and anyone can come pull them off with a 30-day trial to some junk program. The only thing the NSA would do better is to actually remove the platters and scan them several layers deep to peel out what they can. OF COURSE, THAT'S WHY IT IS NSA POLICY TO REWRITE HARD DRIVES OVER 7 TIMES WITH RANDOMIZED DATA BEFORE THEY ARE CONSIDERED SAFE.IDIOT.
Yeah Apple messed up. No one at CompUSA does anything but a diagnostic on laptops before the unit is shipped to Apple's repair facilities. I don't know about other stores, but we offer everyone the opportunity to backup their data before sending it off for $70. There is even a part of the sign-in process that each customer has to initial before the process is complete. If anyone initials "NO" we basically have the freedom to wipe a drive without fear of liability. We can do this with PC's too! Toshiba is notorious for wiping customers drives at the repair facility and sending them back with a standard OS. I hope everyone gets a chance to read this. It would really make my life easier. Hopefully it saves someone else the pain and suffering, too. I hope everything works out for the guy.

That's exactly why I always remove my data and wipe my HD before taking my computer in for service.
