npr.org— Julio Diaz got mugged last month at knife point. Instead of running away, he gives the mugger his coat and buys him dinner!

I understand your point but what you say about this defining "True Christians" could also be said of True Muslims, True Jews, True Buddhists, True Hindus, etc. The bottom line is that the qualities exhibited by Mr. Dias are what define a "True Human" -- maybe that's what all those religions are saying too.
I have always had it in the back of my head to try the same thing if someone ever tries to mug. It will all depend on the situation and how I feel that day. I might just try to kick their ass or just run away.
The "just got out of prison" story is a pretty common con, since it's somewhat probable in certain places. I gave to a man in Newark train station who used the prison story, but said he was in for killing the man who raped his daughter. THAT was a good story. True or not that got my empathy running. That guy earned his ten.I've seen a different type of beggars over the last few years, guys that give you something back like telling a compelling story or offering subway directions. These guys offer services and give memories, and that makes them way more worth it.
And I used to think this scene was so contrived...Mugger: You. Give me all your money!Iroh: What are you doing?Mugger: I’m mugging you!Iroh: With that stance?Mugger: What? What are you talking about? Just give me your money, old man!Iroh: With a poor stance you are unbalanced, and you can be easily knocked over.*thump*Mugger: Ugh!Iroh: With a solid stance, you are a much more serious threat...Iroh: Much better! But to tell you the truth, you do not look like the criminal type. Mugger: I know. I'm...I'm just confused!...Mugger: So you really think I could be a good masseur?Iroh: Of course!Mugger: This is so great! No one has ever believed in me.Iroh: While it is always best to believe in one's self, a little help from others can be a great blessing. "-Avatar: The Last Airbender"
