examiner.com — ?Guns & Constitution? series: In response to gun control & federal abuses, eight states now debate sovereignty, including the "Montana Firearms Freedom Act." Remarkably, series readers continue to misread the ?militia? clause of the Second Amendment, which is not an instrument *of* the federal government, but a check against?

In trying to interpret the constitution, you have to realize how incredibly paranoid the founders were toward a large, central power. Pretty much the entire bill of rights was a check against the executive, and I don't think the 2nd amendment is any different.

I'm not really a gun owning type of guy. Most of you will recognize me as being, really left wing. But rights to gun ownership should not be restricted.

I have a lot of respect for you MR. Niallgriff for speaking up ! Many of us gun folks don't ever want to shoot anyone, but we do intend to keep our FREE COUNTRY, you're welcome in my fox hole any day! Hopefully you'll take a look at a few more of the issues we are just as passionate about, and you'll see we love our fellowman; that's why we feel we have to be able to protect them and this way of life GOD ALMIGHTY and our forefathers gave us !!!

Gore makes me sick, the same year RED CHINA shoots down a satellite traveling 17,500 mph just above 21 miles above the earth with the military secrets he gave them he wins a Nobel Prize; and then we have one of the coldest winters in our country's history where 100's of Americans die !!!WHAT A DUMB A_S !!! No wonder his own state has dis-owned him !!!

Dear setset ...Please don't address me with a "so called 'patriot' insult" when you know not what you speak of!I showed absolutely no prejudice towards "LeftWingLoonies", as you can clearly see above that he or she chose that moniker for themselves. There's already enough prejudice and insult on here without folks like you simply fabricating it!

Great comments by Niallgriff, 45superman and 67Cowboy! Working together, and politely agreeing to disagree when needed can do wonders when it comes to problem solving. My hat's off to all three of you folks!Just take a look at what happened to a post of mine above when someone shoots before giving even a nano-second of thought to what is being said.

With regards to the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights ....The unregulated militia isn't meant to go against our own forces. It is meant to augment them. In the event we find ourselves in an oppressive government. The regulated militia, according to the Oath, Which places the U.S. Constitution above anything else, is to serve to protect our way of life by removing those that threaten it. Including a overly corrupt government that turned against the people. As for warding off a so call modern "army" What do you think 64M civilian sniper (better known as game hunters) are capable of doing to the enemy? People need to actually put down their novels at night and grab a copy of the U.S. Constitution and actually read it. Not just focus on their favorite Right while at the same time ignoring the others or thinking they are not as important as their favorite right. OK So 64 Million is a bit high. According to FBI Statistics that is how many gun owners reside in this country so if push comes to shove I bet that everyone with a rifle will quickly look at sniping vice running up against a large ground force. Granted there would be tanks and other usual things found when fighting a war. But with out people on the outside supplying them with ammo and fuel. How long do you think they would remain operational?
