defectivekit.net — There are many times where laptops need an install of Windows XP or Windows 2000, and the system doesn't have a CD-ROM (or functioning CD-ROM). This is a method using another computer, that will help you install Windows on a system with no CD-ROM or floppy drive available.

Using another partition as the install 'cd'... interesting. I wonder how simple it would be to do this with gnu/linux.By the way, assuming you have a CD drive, I highly recommend making a Ghost cd of your clean OS install after it's done (and after you've installed Office Apps, Firefox, Warcraft, etc...). If you are like me, and like to blow away the OS every 6 months and start fresh, a Ghost CD saves you hours.

Assuming you have no OS on the computer and CDROM, USB or floppy any of the many PXE based network based (RIS, etherboot, etc) solutions have worked best for me. I just boot any one of Bart's (<a class="user" href="http://nu2.nu)">http://nu2.nu)</a> solutions (PE Builder is my favorite) using PXE and go from there.Of course this assumes that you have a PXE enabled network card. I just keep known good PCMCIA and PCI cards around that support PXE and use them in case the target machine doesn't have it.

this reminds me of a Toshiba ultralight laptop i bought for $150 w/o cd rom drive....i ordered a proprietary usb enclosure for $15, formatted it fat32, copied three folders from xp cd to the hdd and ran the install from the i386 folder...i did run into a problem because the copy of xp was not burned correctly so a few file names were truncated....but that was remedied by fixing the truncated file names.

Guy says don't accidentally erase your hard drive, then uses the C drive all through the writing. Also doesn't mention Fdisk might need to be patched/fixed to "see" larger than 120GB hard drives.

Or you could just install Linux over a network from a PXE install server:<a class="user" href="http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Set_Up_A_PXE_Install_Server_For_Multiple_Linux_Distributions_On_Ubuntu_Edgy">http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Set_Up_A_PXE_Install_Server_For_Multiple_Linux_Distributions_On_Ubuntu_Edgy</a>

i stumbled upon this because i was searching for a way to reinstall/format my laptop, a jap Panasonic cf-s51 let's note 364mhz.no cd or dvd drive, no floppy drive, and doesnt boot on USB. hard drive cannot be detached unless i open the whole system.the method describe here doesn't apply for me. and i find it inconvenient.i find this not impressing, i have a better idea than his old DOS method. and yes old laptops/pc cannot boot from USB.GUIDE: INSTALL WINDOWS XP ON OLD PC/LAPTOP WITHOUT THE USE OF FLOPPY DRIVE1. since you've removed the hard drive from the laptop and connected it to an IDE 2.5 to 3.5 adapter you should just put/exchange it in a another working computer with CD drive (remove the original HD on it so Data will be safe), 2. format and install windows 98 se directly to it. (use minimal windows softcraps for faster install time)3. then when it is running windows 98 copy the whole Windows XP CD unto a folder on the Laptop HD (ex. C:XPSetup).4. put the laptop Hard Disk back to the laptop and let it boot Windows 98 se, browse to the XPSetup folder and hit SETUP. choose New Installation. during setup do not choose the option to format HD, just overwrite the OS. NOTESA. use a third party software if you want to convert laptop drive to NTFS.A. if you just install XP directly to it, it will not boot on the laptop, only on the computer where you installed XP.my idea is way easier isn't it?
