Acutally, Miro uses VLC to play its videos, and does quite a few things more VLC alone won't do, such as the channels and subscriptions to video podcasts. So, basically, by getting Miro, you're getting all the video-playing power of VLC + all the Miro extras. Good stuff. ... that said, there are reasons to have VLC alone, sicne it can do wondrous things with video streams and such. So get both! Hard disk space is cheap these days. :)
Why the hell do they recommend Miro for playing oddball formats... Miro should really not be used to play random movie files, it's far too slow. VLC, which the Windows version of Miro uses to play video, is far more powerful and fast.
