Yeah,we look for "real magic" and its infront of us but world is too busy or ignorant to even realize that.Universe, infinity, space, time its all mind boggling and its all magic.
"This picture definitely puts you in awe of just how mind-bogglingly huge the universe is... my question is, what's beyond the universe? A featureless, blank void? An even bigger area that holds multiple universes? Cool whip?"Possibly just a t-shirt as reward for getting there. I can only hope it's a girly shirt. ^^
that is an artist's conception, and they did a very nice job with it, and they spent a LOT of time on that. but look at the background. It's super clear and black. In an actual photograph, there would be specs and granulation. Look up Hubble Ultra Deep Field. That is an actual photograph of something very similar to this picture, but it is real. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field was taken by Hubble by staring at a tiny piece in the sky probably no bigger than your pinky nail if you were to look at it from earth, and looking at it for two weeks i think. By staring at it, that means leaving the shutters of the camera open long enough for all of that light to penetrate. There is the Hubble Deep Field and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Look it up on google images. They are truly extraordinary pictures.
you can't take a picture of something you can't look down at from lightyears away. like when you take a picture of yourself, you have to hold your arm out as far as you can for it to work. now try that on a galactic scale :P We still haven't hit interstellar space (the voyagers are very close, though) let alone intergalactic :P
when the universe was created, it was not what people imagine as a point. The universe started off very large still, so large that up until now (maybe 14 billion years later) there are parts of it that have still never interacted with each other, ever, because one side is too far away from the other for light to have reached.
