How does it do more harm than good? OK it costs those who are advertising but it provides extra funds for the site. Are you saying you would prefer people *not* to click on your adverts? Also, time = money, so the time that is spent clicking is costing that person.
Ok its kind of hypocritical to say that this is a bad move for Google, then say that Google needs to focus their efforts (Gmail, Gtalk, Calandar, Video, etc.) The way I see it, this is a perfect move for Google, they are an advertising company, that is where their money comes in, now they are giving a purpose to their other products, and weather you like it or not, advertising is here to stay (especially from Google)-Mike
Should click on an ad (if the ad interests you too) for every article or site you appreciate. If small guys can't make money on the net all enthusiast sites will go down and the internet will belong to Rupert Murdoch or someone who decides he doesn't like your free speech. When I read a good article or see a good ad I reward them the best I can.

I see this as a logical move by Google. Well, worth the service they are providing.
