businessweek.com — Google Inc. on Wednesday plans to begin letting consumers download and print free of charge classic novels and many other, more obscure books that are in the public domain. Using Google's Book Search service, Web surfers hunting titles like Dante's "Inferno" and Aesop's "Fables" will be able to download PDF files of the books.

cuposmuck, because there's no way plain text is better than scanned image, right?PG is about out-of-copyright classics. You may as well complain that Flickr doesn't do video.

Anybody who doesn't understand why we don't like PDFs, try reading a typical PDF ebook on a smartphone's 320x240 screen. Then try reading the same ebook in Microsoft Reader or pretty much ANY other format than PDF. Be sure to leave enough headroom for the lightbulb that will be appearing.

unversed:Yeah, a single building where everybody in the world can walk to, where the books take up space, and where only one person can have the book at a time! That's WAY superior to having something where everybody in the world can access it, and as many people as want the book can have it at the same time.Technology is bad! Boo progress!

@syberghostObviously you have never been to a library, or learned to read emoticons, note my sarcasm. I've never had trouble getting the book I need at a library, and don't consider it a waist of space. I have nothing against google books, just being a smart-ass you ass

Old books that are almost never read can be posted. People who do not have access to a library will be able to find the books on google. Amazon's ebook store is expanding. In the future, all books may be electronic.
