arstechnica.com — We inspected Microsoft's joint filing and found that Microsoft is not going to allow a complete override of the default search service in all Explorer windows, and that the company also rejects Google's concerns about performance.

Isn't google about "do no evil?". I thought their motto was something on the lines of.. Build the best search engine and people will use it, now it seems their forcing people to use their crappy Desktop search software..

If Vista got internet search capabilities it could be entirely transparent, in the background, through Microsoft Live or whatever they're calling it now, and just feeding XML results in to software for use. That's more likely I think. Going to the browser is a redundant step if you're working in [application] regardless of what [application] is. Unless it's a browser of course.

The problem is that the fact that the index service is running does not interfere with the operation of GDS. The worst it can do is provide competing low priority I/O traffic. Disabling the service would prevent Vista search from working, and as such would be detrimental for other users of the same computer who may legitimately wish to use Vista search.I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing to have an option to change the default search engine (in the same way we have the option for using an alternative Firewall), but it is unfair of google to single out Microsoft unless they also have the complaint about Spotlight. It is similar to Adobe's complaint about pdf creation. If GDS is superior, people will use it. Microsoft has not done anything to further restrict what it used to do on XP.

wtf one can turn of the search in Vista, google is just a BS company exploiting the antitrust rules for its one selfish benefits at the cost of the consumer. Turning of search would disable may of Vista's features like virtual folders.
