so...if I get this straight, popularity will decide what articles make it to the top. How is that different from Digg, or reddit, except that the mighty throbbing Google authorities get to decide who posts articles? Its not even close to what Wikipedia is.
I see Knol as a response to Encarta or World Book, not Wikipedia.Although Wikipedia is a great resource, it's largely used for general information. Knol is designed to be more of an encyclopedia authority written by professionals who have done a good amount of research on the topic in focus. Some of my English teachers wouldn't even take Wikipedia as a reference, but the citations usually were more authoritative.
If Google dedicates enough resources it can bring Knol close to Wikipedia, but I don't think it will ever happen. They want to be #1 at everything which is not practical. Even though they have enormous resources, it is impossible to be good at million things. Wikipedia is successful and it does what it is supposed to do exceedingly well.A Wikipedia authorhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shortanswer

How is it different from About.com? For me, the question is who's gonna be an answer to Google - http://www.altsearchengines.com/.
