blogs.zdnet.com — Android started off being a great idea, from a great company, with lots of support from carriers and manufacturers, and an awesome $10million contest to get developers drooling. With some stiff competition from Apple, and loss of developer morale, I?m afraid of what the future might hold for this platform.

Google should go balls out on this and tell the partners to get lost. Google does not need them. If OpenMoko can coerce a hardware maker to build them a device Google can too, and certainly with better results due to their deep pockets. If Google came out with their own open phone and even if it just interfaced well with their services it would be a winner. You could say Google has the exact opposite of what Apple has. Apple has the hardware and their infrastructure (MobileMe, .Mac) sucks. Google already has a excellent infrastructure and simply lacks a decent piece of hardware. To be honest, this is a matter of a telephone call to some Chinese manufacturers and Google is on the way to the only serious candidate to compete with the iPhone.BTW, lose the online add idea on cell phones and just partner with a decent carrier like Apple did, of for crying out loud Google BECOME a carrier.

Christ, can we wait for a platform/hardware to be released before we proclaim it's doom? f**k sensationalist internet speculation for the sake of getting hits. In the ass.

Linux on mobile phone = kiss of death. None of the mobile linux platforms have taken off and/or have failed before even being released.

I get worried about Google sometimes....They have such high revenues and profit margins right now that they can do anything they want to, fail at it, and still be ok. However, the day will probably come in the future when they do have competition. Just ask some of the huge companies of yester-year (i.e. IBM and such). Competition for Google CAN happen, and when it does, Google will be in a world of hurt. Most businesses have to learn to be profitable, but Google has never had to do that. I have a friend in a Google internship right now, and it is crazy how lax that environment it. Good for employees, but I seriously doubt the 5 star Chefs and 3 free meals a day will last if they are forced to be competitive. Don't get me wrong - I love some of there stuff, but the quality of some of there products show that they don't have a serious mindset. They are still in "play" mode it seems.

While I am a Symbian user and I don't love everything Google does, it has already a huge feature. It is open!
