"The right to bear arms doesn't really pan out against tanks & aircraft." MMhmmm.. How many US towns do you think the VOLUNTEER military will destroy before they revolt against the government?
I have nothing to hide. What are you so afraid of? Do you really think the government cares about your mundane emails? Unless you're doing something illegal, you really shouldn't care.
i hope everyone realizes by now that _any_ email you send or receive thru google will be stored("backed up") on their servers...that's part of "storing and organizing the world's information". The government doesn't even compare. "Storing and organizing world's information" has a lot more meaning to it than that much-publicized "don't be evil".
It has been said a few times here and needsw to be said again. GMail is Google's. Anything that you send and receive belongs to Google and if the US government serves them with a warrant then they will be in contempt if they do not comply. This is no different to your work email. The company owns it and this has been repeatedly held up in the US and Australian courts. You want privacy? Set up your own mail server & use encryption. Not rocket science.
If nothing more, this should give one pause if they consider using online storage and web based office suites if the data is stored online. I don't think it's a stretch to imagine your documents being subpoenaed by an ex-wife, business partner or anyone else.
Er... you suggest YAHOO for avoiding Gmail privacy concerns? Is this the same Yahoo that handed over emails to the chinese regime and got an innocent journalist put in jail for the heinous crime of exercising his human rights?
