theregister.co.uk — Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software. A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as 'Goobuntu'.

NOT TRUE! They've already denied it (via arstechnica):http://digg.com/software/Google_denies_plans_to_distribute_OS_based_on_Ubuntu_

Well, Well. GOOG in fact did crash today:"Web search and Internet stock phenomenon Google Inc. on Tuesday posted a profit that missed Wall Street targets due largely to a higher than expected tax rate, sending its shares down as much as 19 percent in after hours trade." IT'S DOWN $70!So whatever asshat modded me down on my original humouous post can bite me.I repost it here for your edification:FUTURE HEADLINE:Former Search Engine Giant Google Purchased for $13 Million.Remember Google? They were that search engine everyone was so hyped on back in 2006. Their stock was trading at insane levels as only a dot-com stock can. Plagued by quality control problems, the former search engine company flamed out with a spectacular series of blunders in video and music, and finally flushed what little remained of their brand equity down the toilet with a ridiculous Linux distro that failed to catch on. The once fabled company was purchased yesterday by AOL for $13 million in stock, which industry insiders viewed as an attempt to bolster AOL's censorware efforts. "They had some pretty cool user-tracking algorithms that actually pinpointed the offending user's GPS coordinates." Said AOL exec Steve Case. "What do you think the whole Maps thing was really about."

@DigDuality and others: I'm talking about playing Everquest 2... that would suck in Linux with the emulators, I would assume. Yes, I'm a girl and I play EQ2, I'm a geek. :P---------------------------------------------------http://fuh-q.com

this would be the end of the windows monopoly. people go with trusted brand rather than quality. as long as goobuntu is average (or hopefully better), then the masses will switch the same way they switched to internet explorer. especially if it is free. Let's hope it's true.
