occasionallyoriginal.com — Just when you thought Google couldn’t get any more jaw-droppingwith its latest explorations, you realize with a sudden andexasperated “omigod” that this is bigger…much bigger than weimagined. Google, NASA, and MIT are going to change theworld…again.

So, tell me. My friend just got a patent that delivers 10x dsl speeds over copper with no distance limitations like DSL “digital subscribe lines? in effect solving the last mile problem.Does he still have a chance of getting this technology off the ground?

It's a nice idea but keep in mind there's a HUGE difference between the wifi and a satellite.Wifi I can see for a city sure maybe nyc. Maybe a county or mabye a small state like rhode island or deleware...but the whole world on a wifi ? No way.Propagation for satellite can go a very long way. Look at lyngsat which tracks satellites for radio and tv. The largest ones tend to get maybe a bit more than one continent. And this is for tv and radio...they'd need probably at LEAST five if not six satellites for this to work.and we already have satellite internet service from directway which is pretty expensive compaired to cable and dsl.

The world on a massive wi-fi network is certainly a far off possibility, but definitely a possibility. GPS basically create a virtual netting around the whole of the globe. If a wi-fi network could be adequately maintained via satellite at all, then it stands to reason that with enough satellites a world network is possible. Whether or not it's presently plausible or whether Google has any plans for this is beyond though.

Microsoft tried something similar to this years ago. Hundreds of really low satellites to reduce the latency. Inspired by the Iridium constellation. Tricky and pricey. Need lots of ground stations ($$) or really exotic cross-links between the birds (also $$) to get data to a bird that can see a ground station.. unless they're proposing a completely wireless system with crosslinks and no broadband ties to terrestrial Internet.. hmmm.. uplink power from clients is a problem... Microsoft backed out. Maybe the ROI is finally there.
