icann.org— Google, Inc. just recently became an ICANN-accredited domain name registarar for .com, .net, and .org TLDs, among others. Could this mean Google has plans to begin selling domains soon?

This is really old old news. Google has been a registrar for months or more. Some poeple think that they will not enter the domain name registration business but they will only use their privileges as registrars for improving their search engine (they gained access to interesting data sources).
Google is great, and they often do things in a new and innovative way. But I do have my reservations on how expansive they are becoming in the internet world. We will just have to wait and see.
Since their latest patent explains they'll be looking at domain settings (length of registration etc), I'd say they'd be using this to aid domain lookups, and not to offer domain registration.

Perhaps they are just making sure no one else takes any of the different varieties of Google domains?

don't submit old news as if it's new; people that didn't hear about it months ago don't deserve to hear about it... (sarcasm)noclip did it right
