Everyone knows the budget is going to exceed $20m. Paul Allen spent $25 million to win $10 million for the Ansari X-prize. Someone will do it. Hell, I would if I had $100 million to blow.
Getting a human into space and getting a robot there are completely different, so I don't think this is far and away tougher than the Ansari X-Prize Getting a small payload into space can be done easily now. Say the payload for the project is 500 lbs. In a few years, the price to get that into high orbit altitude will be below $5 million. There ya go, step one is already taken care of. Now, just figure out how to keep it moving, and land it. Not saying this will be an easy, or a financially worthwhile task, but it can likely be done for under $75 million. What is blowing $50 million to a billionaire? Especially when he can stake claim to landing something on the moon.
