nytimes.com — The Internet search giant announced that it would build a server farm in North Carolina, where land is cheap. IGoogle says it hopes laid-off furniture workers, most of whom never graduated from high school, will be among the 250 employees at two facilities on the 215-acre site, much of which was once a lumberyard.

"Here, we bought a 16 year old 1600 sq. ft. home on a 9,000 sq. ft. lot for $340,000."Where are you living on the "West Coast", the backwoods hills of Oregon? You are living cheap, brother. I'd kill for 1600 square feet for $340,000 down San Diego way. That's a starter condo in the ghetto down here. It's called paying the Sunshine Tax; In return, we get to wear shorts on Thanksgiving and Christmas and don't need Air Conditioning in the summer.

I wonder if anyone in the city planning board had to look up what type of animal/vegetable a "Server" was. ;-)

uh, not at all. Walmart sucks the life out of small towns by forcing the "mom-and-pop" places to shut down. I doubt thats gonna happen here. Not too many "mom-and-pop" server farms around here to run out of town.

Wow ALOT of people have ridiculous misconceptions about NC. Yes like all states your going to find "rednecks" but there are plenty of very educated people. The RTP area I beleive has the greatest concentration of PHD's in the entire country. Plus with great schools like UNC and DUKE within 20 miles of each other, there will never be a shortage of intelligent people. I applaud Google for not taking the easy (most profitable) way out like a lot of companies, and doing good for a community that has suffered in the past few years.

i'll add that there is a community college and technical institute just a few miles down the road from lenoir. having the google server farm could perhaps provide some valuable internships for students, and possible jobs for graduates...

The problem is that some areas you simply cannot get a job in IT without 3 years of experience. It all has to do with the markets and the workers. Finding a techie in a university town is just about as easy as finding a furniture maker in NC.
