arstechnica.com — Google is putting together a bundle of software, including a google-tweaked version of Firefox (gbrowser?), Acrobat Reader, Symantec Antivirus, AdAware, Trillian, Realplayer, and all of those free google programs everyone loves, like Earth, Talk, Desktop and Picasa. Basically, an Internet starter kit for people who don't like MS.

Symantec's AV solutions are bloated, yes, but even worse - they aren't very good at what they are supposed to do. I agree that a free, small AV program would be better, but I also have to suggest using something from Trend. I used to hate their stuff, too, but they really do the best job for your money (if you're going to pay). I also like F-prot, which is nice and small and has daily updates, but it has issues with actually handling all the viruses it detects.

Real is pure crap, I agree. It was great when it was brand new. I remember wanting a Real streaming server really bad back in the day. I watched it go from light and useful to bloated and just plain stupid. Anyway, I haven't taken them seriously in probably 5 years.

Big mistake choosing Symantec over Nod32. I'm also shocked that RealPlayer was included in the list. But even more puzzling is the inclusion of Trillian. It would make more sense for them to open Google Talk to the other services.

Good idea, and they mean well. Take out Symantec & RP, and it sounds relatively decent.

Settle down people, its out now http://pack.google.com and you can add and remove any of those programs from the pack before download. But in agreement about RealPlayer being a POS

In related news Google will also take the wraps off of "Google Pack," a bundle of applications that will be made available for download in a single installation bundle at http://www.googleav.com . Sources tell us that Google pack will feature a Google-tweaked version of Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Reader, antivirus software from Symantec, AdAware, Trillian, and Google's own offerings, including Google Desktop Search, Picasa, Google Earth, Google Talk, and all of the toolbar action you can shake a stick at. Oh, and I left out one other item: the RealPlayer.Download free copy of google pack from http://www.googleav.com now
