forbes.com — Late last week, Google met with a group of music industry executives and described the private event as merely for "networking." But Caris analyst Mark Stahlman suspects that Google is getting ready to launch a Music Store to rival Apple Computer iTunes.

A day late and a dollar short. (Actually more like years late.) I don't like what google is doing now. They're venturing out into areas that A) have way too much competition or are already dominated like the iTunes music store, and B) they don't belong. Google is good at what they made all their money from - Web Services. Google search maps and gmail. Google doesn't belong in the multimedia area of the market. Nothing proves this more than they're poor excuse for what they call a video store. C'mon google, be yourself!

Does this mean Google will help me organize my mp3 collection in a nice program? Will the google downloads work on my iPod?This will fail just like the Google Video Store...just because of lack of convenience. Apple provides the convenience of downloading, organizing, and transferring of music.

Oakes...show me a competitor that costs MORE than the iPod for the same features.

As long as Google keeps copying Apple software with their own 'unique open-source' twist that all those tech heads are whining about they should do just fine.I mean, after all, gmail is a windows version of Apple's Mail.Google calander ... iCaloh and they're maps and shopping and all those seperate things Google does 'so impressively' online, has been being done by Apple w/ Sherlock since at least 2001. And Apple uses Google's powerful search technology to inc. most of this now -- but who started it?Point is -- Google apps, like Picasa or whatever, are windows version of Apple Apps, and I'm starting to think it smells a bit rotten.
